Urban acoustic monitoring devices enabling the post-processing and streaming of noise data

Co-financed project: EU project ECCENTRIC 90 % funding, ECO2 10 % funding Researcher: Siddharth Venkataraman, duration 2 years
Started: 2018

This project is aiming to support the research on noise emissions from sustainable transport. The goal is to design and implement urban acoustic monitoring devices enabling the post-processing and streaming of noise data, in particular delivery noise. In a first phase a low cost noise level meter device, will be developed. This would enable the monitoring of sound pressure levels with a comparable level of accuracy to city agency standards, and to combine these with enhanced computing capabilities for intelligent, in-situ signal processing and wireless raw audio data transmission. After validation in lab conditions, several devices will be implemented in selected locations in Stockholm in the scope of the project. The second phase will consist in ensuring the acquisition, processing and storage of the noise level data. These data will be processed both to provide information on the noise level at these locations in different operating conditions (delivery conditions, day or night-time delivery, . . . ), and in order to train machine learning algorithms. The goal is also in this second phase to implement a methodology for the detection, and then robust classification of noise events using neural networks.
